College Librarian for COCC, and Joint Services for the OSU-Cascades Campus;
Director, Library Rotunda Gallery; Director, Scholar in Residence Program, 1994-
OSU-Cascades is the
new Oregon State
University branch campus that opened
in fall 2001 on the COCC campus in Bend,
Oregon.
Current
Environment and Responsibilities
-
Manage, plan, and develop policy for the campus library
serving lower division, upper division and select graduate-level programs. The
combined campus serves nearly 4,000 students and over 150 faculty in a rapidly
expanding environment of higher education opportunities.
- Lead the library management team in creating a vision
and goals for shared library services, including library systems and all
library services in accordance with policies and procedures agreeable to COCC,
OSU-Cascades and OSU.
- Supervise the two full time faculty librarians,
the Head of Public Services, and the Head of Technical Services. Lead the
library management team of professional librarians and the two OSU-Cascades
Librarians.
- Insure that all staff, professional and
classified, have access to development opportunities.
- Take an active role in the Orbis Cascade
Alliance management and in other regional academic library initiatives.
- Coordinate and direct the library’s assessment
projects and its instructional programs
- Direct the Library Rotunda Gallery which hosts
campus arts shows, manages all juried shows. including the recent Spirit of Our Northwest Forests, an
exhibit of work by over 40 northwest artists.
- Direct the Scholar in Residence Program, a year
long residency for a writer that gives opportunities for the Scholar to
interact directly with aspiring writers on campus and in the community.
- Chair, Campus Art Acquisitions Committee. We
have commissioned two recent outdoor pieces of art. The committee is working on
art for the new Student
Center building expected
to be done in 2009.
- Head Library Development in cooperation with the
COCC Foundation. Recent work: negotiate the donation of four bronze sculptures
to the library.
Accomplishments
- Developed the library vision and mission around
the concept of the learning commons –encouraging all types of learning beyond
the classroom and expanding opportunities for student collaboration and group
learning. Opened the library to more campus use, such as faculty-student advising
days.
- Created the Library Rotunda Gallery which increased
the use of the library building for educational activities, poetry readings, art
displays and exhibits directly related to courses being taught. Involved
faculty from OSU-Cascades and COCC in planning and delivering displays and
events.
- Created the Scholar in Residence program now in
its third year in providing. The Scholar in Residence has an office in the
Library and consults with faculty and students on their writing projects.
- Developed a marketing campaign for the library
resulting in an increased awareness of the library’s scholarly resources
available to faculty and students.
- Served on campus technology teams in order to ensure
developments in technology support the mission of the library and the needs of
the students. This has led to the development of wireless Internet access in
the building.
- Negotiated
over several years for the entrance of COCC into Orbis, now the Orbis
Cascade Alliance, and became the
fifteenth member and first community college library in the consortium in
1999.
- Participated in the campus-wide planning for
expansion into upper division and graduate programs. Planned cooperative
strategies with OSU to serve the new OSU-Cascades Campus located at COCC.
- Wrote the
accreditation documents for the 2002 site visit by the Northwest
Commission on Colleges and Universities. The library received
commendations from the Commission.
- Hired,
guided, and advised the professional faculty librarians who must meet
campus tenure and promotion guidelines.
- Annually
reviewed and revised departmental fiscal needs and presented these needs
to college administration. The library has stayed within its well-honed
budget.
- Provided
analysis and response to the Oregon Board of Higher Education for the
proposals on library services for the University Branch development. This
work resulted in a solid foundation on which to build excellent services
for the OSU-Cascades campus as it took shape.
- Led the
transition team working with our counterparts as OSU’s Valley Library in
planning for joint services.
- Carried
significant responsibilities for new library planning, design and
construction, a $13,000,000 project entailing a 72,000 square foot
building that opened in March, 1998. Met weekly for design and
construction, 1994-1998, with the contractor, site manager, Vice President
for Business, and the architects as part of the construction team. Hired
additional professional staff to manage a building almost four times the
size of the old library. Involved
staff in new building planning and collection development projects.
- Participated
actively in campus leadership committees, such as the Instructional Team
(Deans of Instruction and Technology) and the Department Chairs Council.
As a result, the library is included in the planning and development of projects
on campus.
- Served as
a member of the Art Committee which judged and selected art for the new
library. The Faculty Forum and the library annually purchase several award
winning pieces of student art each year to build the library’s art
collection.
- Chaired
the Instructional Networking Task Force from 1995-97 and produced a report
for the President covering all technology areas for instruction with
short-term and long-term recommendations for the institution and its seven
outlying centers in adjacent towns.
- Served as
management team member for college-faculty contract negotiation, 1999.
- Worked directly
with the Dean of the University
Center to develop
all areas of library support for B.A. and M.A. programs on campus. Negotiated
funding, policies and procedures with brokering institutions for library
support.
- Taught
the first course on Internet research on the COCC campus in 1994.
Library Development
- Worked
directly with the Foundation on a Library endowment campaign. The
resulting endowment directly supports the science collection and provides
funding for expensive items beyond what would normally be purchased from
library capital.
- Collaborated
with the Grants Officer on grant proposals.
- Contacted
companies and individuals for contributions.
- Oversaw special
projects to build upper division collections.
- Created a
Friends of the College Library group under the 501(c3) protection of the
COCC Foundation.
- Developed
library special collections and its collection of art.
Regional Work
- Participated in the Orbis Cascade Alliance Council of Directors. The Council
hires the Executive Director and staff of the Alliance and directs the management of the
consortium through regular council meetings with the Executive Director and the
Executive Council. Elected to the Executive Council for 2004-6, re-elected to
2008.
- Represented the Central
Oregon University
Center, and now the joint campus with
OSU on the Oregon University System Library Council composed of the seven
public university library directors in Oregon,
and was Chair, 1996-1998. Worked on budget and policy issues for the libraries
and presented this to the Chancellor’s office, resulting in increases for
serials budgets for the libraries.
- Served as regional leader for CORE – Connect Oregon, an ad-hoc state-wide committee working with the
state legislature to provide access for electronic resources in all Oregon libraries.
- Served on
the statewide database licensing committee for the negotiation of
contracts with vendors. Served two years at the State Library on the LSTA
Committee to read, evaluate and select grant proposals.
- Co-Chair
of the Oregon
Community College
Library Association, 1994-7. Served on a task force that hired a
technology consultant to analyze technology options for creating greater
resource sharing, 1998-2001.
- Appointed
to the State Library’s Oregon Information Highway Project Committee to
address technology needs in Oregon
libraries.
Boards and
Council Activities
- Appointed
by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior to be the Environmental
Representative to the Steens Mountain Advisory Council for the 2006-2009
term. The council of twelve members negotiates land use issues and advises
the BLM on the administration of the Steens Mountain Cooperative
Management Protection Area.
- Steens Mountain Advisory Council Science Committee 2007-2009.This
committee of OSU scientists and others is advising BLM on science policy
and information management.
- Board
member for the Nature of Words, a regional institute featuring noted
authors. Negotiated a partnership between COCC and the Nature of Words for
sponsorship of the Rising Star writing awards program.

of a new library. Upgraded and advanced technical services operations,
including joining OCLC. Managed a
retrospective conversion project in advance of implementing a new Innovative

capacity and services to serve regional colleges and universities.

indexing journal table of contents data, and incorporated one of the earliest
systems for patron initiated requests for the delivery of journal content.
