Current Position

College Librarian for COCC, and Joint Services for the OSU-Cascades Campus;

Director, Library Rotunda Gallery; Director, Scholar in Residence Program 1993-

OSU-Cascades is the new Oregon State University branch co-located on the COCC campus in Bend, Oregon.

 

Specific Responsibilities
  • Manage, plan, and develop policy for the campus library serving lower division, upper division and select graduate-level programs. The combined campus serves nearly 4,000 students and over 150 faculty in a rapidly expanding environment of higher education opportunities.
  •  Lead the library management team in creating a vision and goals for shared library services, including library systems and all library services in accordance with policies and procedures agreeable to COCC, OSU-Cascades and OSU
  • Supervise full time faculty librarians and part time librarians. Lead the library management team of professional librarians including two OSU-Cascades Librarians.
  •  Insure that all staff, professional and classified, have access to development opportuniti
  • Take an active role in the Orbis Cascade Alliance management and in other regional academic library initiatives.
  • Coordinate and direct the library’s assessment projects and its instructional programs.
  •  Direct the Library Rotunda Gallery. Host campus arts shows. Manage the call to artists for juried shows.  Recent major exhibits: Spirit of Our Northwest Forests, and The Artful Beauty of Scienc Direct the Scholar in Residence Program, a 12 month residency. The Scholar interacts with aspiring writers on campus and in the communitee.
  •  Chair the Campus Art Acquisitions Committee. It has commissioned two outdoor pieces of art. Manage the call for art for the new Student Center building – opening 2009.
  • Head Library Development in cooperation with the COCC Foundation. Recently negotiated the donation of four bronze sculptures to the library.
  • · Develop the library’s digital archives management as part of our membership in the Northwest Digital Archives membership and participate in grant applications and projects with NWDA.
  • Annually review and revise departmental fiscal needs and present these needs to college administration. The library has stayed within its well-honed budget.
  • Participate in campus leadership committees, such as the Instructional Team (Deans of Instruction and Technology) and the Department Chairs Council. The library is included in the planning and development of projects on campus.

 

Library Development

  • Worked directly with the Foundation on a Library endowment campaign. The endowment directly supports the science collection and provides funding for expensive items.
  • Collaborate with the Grants Officer on grant proposals.
  • Contact companies and individuals for contributions.
  • Oversaw special projects to build upper division collections.
  • Created the Friends of the Library group under the 501(c3) protection of the Foundation.
  • Develop library special collections and its collection of art through working with individual donors.

 

Accomplishments

  • Developed the library vision as a learning commons –encouraging all types of learning beyond the classroom and expanding opportunities for student collaboration and group learning. Moved faculty-student advising days into the library.
  • Created the Library Rotunda Gallery which increased the use of the library building for educational activities, poetry readings, art displays and exhibits directly related to courses being taught. Involved faculty from OSU-Cascades and COCC in planning and delivering displays and events.
  • Created the Scholar in Residence program. The Scholar in Residence has an office in the Library and consults with faculty and students on their writing projects.
  • Developed a marketing campaign for the library resulting in an increased awareness of the library’s scholarly resources available to faculty and students.
  • Served on campus technology teams in order to ensure developments in technology support the mission of the library and the needs of the students.  
  • Negotiated for the entrance of COCC into Orbis, now the Orbis Cascade Alliance, a consortium of 35 academic libraries. 
  • Participated in the campus-wide planning for expansion into upper division and graduate programs. Planned cooperative strategies with OSU to serve the new OSU-Cascades Campus located at COCC.
  • Wrote the accreditation documents for Standard 5 for the 2002 site visit by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. The library received commendations from the Commission.
  • Provided analysis and response to the Oregon Board of Higher Education for the proposals on library services for the University Branch development. This work resulted in a solid foundation on which to build excellent services for the OSU-Cascades campus as it took shape.
  • Led the transition team working with our counterparts as OSU’s Valley Library in planning for joint services.
  • Served on the design and build team for the new library taking the project from initial planning to opening.  The 72,000 square foot building opened in 1998.
  • Served as a member of the Art Committee which judged and selected art for the new library. The Faculty Forum and the library annually purchase several award winning pieces of student art each year to build the library’s art collection.
  • Chaired the Instructional Networking Task Force and produced a report for the President covering all technology areas for instruction.
  • Served as management team member for college-faculty contract negotiation.
  • Worked directly with the Dean of the University Center to develop all areas of library support for B.A. and M.A. programs on campus. Negotiated funding, policies and procedures with brokering institutions for library support.
  • Taught courses on Internet research.

 

Regional Work

  • Participated in the Orbis Cascade Alliance Council of Directors. Actively participate in the management of the consortium through regular council meetings with the Executive Director and the Executive Council. Elected to the Executive Council for 2004-6, re-elected to 2008.
  • Committee member for the Northwest Academic Library Directors’ Symposium representing the Alliance Council.
  • Represented the Central Oregon University Center, and now the joint campus with OSU on the Oregon University System Library Council composed of the seven public university library directors in Oregon. Worked on budget and policy issues for the libraries and presented this to the Chancellor’s office, resulting in increases for serials budgets for the libraries.
  • Served as regional leader for CORE – Connect Oregon, an ad-hoc state-wide committee working with the state legislature to provide access for electronic resources in all Oregon libraries.
  • Served on the statewide database licensing committee for the negotiation of contracts with vendors. Served two years at the State Library on the LSTA Committee to read, evaluate and select grant proposals.
  • Co-Chaired the Oregon Community College Library Association.
  • Appointed to the State Library’s Oregon Information Highway Project Committee to address technology needs in Oregon libraries.

 

Boards and Council Activities

  • Steens Mountain Advisory Council, 2006-2009. Appointed by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior as Environmental Representative. The council of twelve members negotiates land use issues and advises the BLM on the administration of the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management Protection Area.
  • Steens Mountain Advisory Council Science Committee 2008-9. This committee is advising BLM on science policy and information management. Leader for  the development of a Steens Mountain portal in the Oregon Explore project of OSU consolidating all related research in an institutional repository.
  • Nature of Words, Board member and Vice-Chair, 2006-, This is a regional institute featuring noted authors.  Negotiated a partnership between COCC and the Nature of Words for sponsorship of the Rising Star writing awards program and for office space in the library.

 

Professional History

  • Head Systems Librarian, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California 1989-1991

Directed systems planning and management for the main and 8 branch libraries in the Caltech system. Directed the implementation of the Innovative Interfaces system. Hired assistant manager for systems and organized all staff training throughout the libraries. Managed a locally developed system for indexing journal table of contents data, and incorporated one of the earliest systems for patron initiated requests for the delivery of journal content.

 

  • Librarian for Systems, Acquisitions, and Collection Development, Westmont College, Santa Barbara, California 1986-1989

Acquired foundation funds to purchase and install an integrated library system. Directed collection development with faculty liaisons and managed acquisitions allocations. Oversaw three staff assistants. Acquired an extensive environmental philosophy collection.

 

  • Head, Technical Services and Library Systems, Cabrillo College, Aptos, California 1991-1993

Participated in the planning for a new library. Restructured technical services operations.  Managed the retrospective conversion project in advance of implementing a new Innovative Interfaces system. Organized all staff training. Met with regional telecommunications specialists and librarians to develop local Internet capacity and services for colleges and universities in the region.

 

Professional Consulting, Teaching, and Work with the Commission on Colleges

  • Contracted consulting for WICHE and WCET projects working on the development of library services for virtual universities.
  • Served on accreditation site teams for the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, with specialty in library and information technology standards.
  • Taught at the Institute for the Management of Distance Education, Breckenridge, CO, July, 2000.
